Published online: 2025 https://doi.org/10.31577/pravnyobzor.2025.3.04 Abstract. The paper deals with professional athletes’ labour mobility and social security in the European Union. The main focus is analysing the legal framework that regulates the free movement of workers within the EU while explicitly dealing with the challenges athletes face when changing employers between member states. It examines EU legislation and regulations that ensure the continuity of athletes’ rights to pension, health insurance and other social benefits. It compares the current legal framework with jurisprudence that significantly influenced the legislation regarding athletes and free movement within the EU. The paper identifies shortcomings in coordinating social systems and portability of pension rights between EU member states, which creates problems, especially for athletes who frequently change clubs and countries. He further emphasises that EU legislation still does not respond flexibly enough to new challenges such as Brexit and the growing globalisation of sport. In the future, it would be appropriate to introduce further measures to harmonise legislation between the EU and third countries to ensure better protection of athletes’ rights.
